Magnetic Bead Technology in Serum Testing
Magnetic bead-based separation has revolutionized sample preparation in life sciences. The principle is elegant yet powerful: superparamagnetic beads, typically composed of an iron oxide core (e.g., magnetite, Fe₃O₄) coated with a polymer shell (e.g., polystyrene, silica), are functionalized with specific ligands (e.g., antibodies, streptavidin, ionic groups, oligonucleotides). When added to a serum sample, these beads selectively bind to the target analyte.
Upon application of an external magnetic field, the bead-analyte complexes are rapidly separated from the liquid matrix.
